Eve is Always Among Us: The Threat of Persistant Monitoring Online

SEATTLE 03may12 - JetCityOrange published a new white paper challenging us to admit that no digital conversation is private and we're being monitored more often than not. "Eve is Always Among Us, persistant montoring of our online traffic" outlines why we have little or no privacy online and why our threat models need to be thrown out.

As more of our life is shared, communicated, published and stored online we all need to take a hard look at how has access to what and why. Just because it's your phone in your pocket full of your data don't think you're the only one with access to all that personal data. On your phone or across wireless networks, nothing about your phone is private and only a knave thinks otherwise. Don't trust your phone.

Before 9/11 only bad guys were deemed worthy of wiretaps and electronic surveillance. The FBI handle domestic affairs, the NSA international, they did't like each other and certainly didn't cooperate. Now it's all about homeland security, the war on terror, and sacrificing privacy for security. In many ways fighting the war on terror makes all of us, American or not, suspects.

The National Security Agency has grown in mission, scope, and influence. Construction of a huge new data center is underway in Bluffdale UT (described by Wired.com ). "Eve is Always Among Us, persistant montoring of our online traffic" discusses what the expanded NSA mission means for all of us, why they're buidling such a large data center in the middle of nowhere, and speculates what they'll do with all the data they're sweeping up.

"Until quite recently, two people assumed they enjoyed a large degree of privacy by default. As our lives have moved online we've given up our privacy. It's time for us to adjust our thinking and behavior in response to our phone calls, email, tweets, and browsing being monitored, analyzed, and stuffed into databases. Databases we don't know about or have control over." says Jerry Whiting, JetCityOrange's publisher. "If you're not vigilant, if you don't act now to protect yourself, you'll forfeit control over your digital life. Learn and adapt."

"Eve is Always Among Us, persistant montoring of our online traffic" is available online: www.JetCityOrange.com/computer-security/eve-among-us.html This is one of several computer security related white papers covering topics like Tor and hiding computers from others.

The NSA Comes to Bluffdale, Utah That Is.

Seattle Police Dept. & #OccupySeattle

As many of you know, I'm deep into the #Occupy movement. My early involvement with #OccupySeattle including but was not limited to videotaping arrests as a witness. Long story short, I edited out one instance of police action that was a.) not representative of the Seattle Police Department and b.) outside of acceptable behavior by a police officer IMHO. I filed a formal complaint through OPA even though the action wasn't directed at me. Today I have the opportunity to sit down with the officer in question along with a mediator. The happy conclusion? The officer and I shared openly and honestly. We watched the video I shot. Officer JL was honest, forthright, and professional, and for that, I thank him from the bottom of my heart.

RSS Feeds Double As Mobile Web Pages Too With foneFrame

SEATTLE - foneFrame creates RSS feeds that are also mobile web pages for smartphones. Read foneFrame RSS feeds on your Android device or iPhone using your favorite web browser, not a feed reader. Make feeds that double as mobile web pages too. [ www.foneFrame.com/RSS/ ]

Millions read feeds and follow podcasts but most people switch to a dedicated feed reader. Your phone's browser is your best friend and goes with you everywhere, so why not use it to access your favorite feeds too? With foneFrame you can!

Link an RSS 2.0 file to a foneFrame stylesheet and convert simple feeds into fully customizable mobile web pages. foneFrame uses CSS3 stylesheets to format feeds; edit the stylesheet to quickly modify your mobile page.

- foneFrame feeds are mobile pages on smartphones

- compatible with Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone, as well as computers & tablets

- Create & maintain your feed on your computer, under your own control

- Fully customizable because foneFrame uses CSS3 stylesheets

- The basic foneFrame framework is free, released under Creative Commons

- The basic foneFrame framework is hosted in the cloud for decreased latency

- Support for PubSubHubBub & message authentication codes

- And it's free!

RSS files are often machine-generated, exported from applications or generated dynamically. Feeds lend themselves to timely alerts and updates pushed out to smartphones, as well as syndication.

foneFrame is a mobile web framework from Azalea Software, Inc. built using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. It's free, open source, and licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY 3.0). This means you're encouraged to edit, change, modify, and mashup foneFrame

foneFrame is available as a template for those who build their own pages, as a web front end that generates mobile web sites, a hack to 'skin' Twitter feeds, and now an RSS wrapper as well. The basic foneFrame framework is stored in the cloud for speed and ease of use. Your web files are kept on your computer, under your control, using HTML5's local storage. foneFrame is a decentralized tool, free from the constraints of a third party site.

"foneFrame is like a lucky penny: it turns up everywhere! Our HTML5 template was first. Then we turned our attention to the web. Using your browser you can write and maintain feeds stored on your computer, not some possibly non-secure third party site." says Jerry Whiting, Azalea Software's founder & president. "We call these 'feeds with style'. Yes, they're feeds but they're also mobile pages. One file, two mediums."

Every feed entry includes a digital fingerprint that provides author and message authentication using an HMAC (Hash-based Message Authentication Code) based on SHA-256.

foneFrame is a project sparked by the use of social media during the Arab Spring and the American Occupy movement. Governments can block access to sites like Twitter and Facebook. What if you could create mobile web pages through your browser? What if cryptography provided authentication automatically? What if foneFrame was hosted for free in the cloud? Would you try it? What would you do with it? How can we make it better?

Azalea Software, Inc., founded in 1992, publishes barcode printing software [ www.azalea.com ], an Android QR scanning app [ www.QRdvark.com ], and mobile dev tools [ www.foneFrame.com ]. Located in Seattle WA, we enjoy writing good software almost as much as we love The Three Jewels.

foneFrame HTML5 Template Press Release

(PDF version)

Don't Have A Mobile Site? You're Late. Not Using HTML5? You're Behind. The Answer? foneFrame!

SEATTLE - Mobile web pages and HTML5? Yes. Web sites for smartphones like Android and iPhone? Done. Creative Commons, open source, and free? Yep, free as in "beer". foneFrame, a free mobile web framework, now has a new template. [ foneFrame.com/fF ]

The foneFrame 2.0.0 template from Azalea Software is the latest implementation of the foneFrame schema. Built with HTML5 + CSS3 with a touch of JavaScript, foneFrame creates mobile pages quickly and easily, and is the ideal way to wireframe mobile pages.

"Why struggle with HTML5? You know you want to use it but can't seem to find the time to master it. foneFrame begins with HTML5 and CSS3 and builds out from there. It's foolish *not* to use foneFrame." says Jerry Whiting, Azalea Software Inc.'s Pres & CEO. "I found the sweet spot between Android and iPhone to be elusive at best. I'm glad to share my learning curve with you because there's no faster way to jumpstart a new web project than by using a template. That's why the foneFrame template is free under the Creative Commons license. We *want* you to edit, change, improve, hack, and mashup it up!"

As opposed to other web templates that are merely static boilerplate you replace, the foneFrame template includes valuable information about SEO (search engine optimization), metadata, and has examples of how to embed Google Maps, Google Calendars, and Twitter feeds into mobile pages. The styles defined in the stylesheet can be mixed and matched to format a wide variety of page layouts.

Other features include:
- the basic framework elements are hosted in the cloud for reduced latency
- a library of basic buttons and icons
- a basic photo gallery with thumbnail navigation
- lots and lots of comments in the code that explain how foneFrame works

foneFrame is a mobile web framework focusing on smartphones like Android and iPhone. Built using HTML5, CSS3, & JavaScript, foneFrame encompasses a schema and naming conventions. Azalea Software, Inc. [ www.azalea.com ], founded in 1992 publishes barcode printing software and mobile dev tools. Located in Seattle WA, Azalea Software is an innovative, one-of-a-kind company.

I've been designing and giving away free calendars for the last 10 years. This year's calendars:

"Psychic Barber" features a photo of the neon sign at Rick’s Barber Shop in West Seattle and a QR barcode that tangentially relates to the sign itself. The neon sign is real and yes there's a story behind it.
"Soup" is a still life photo with a message floating in a bowl of soup. The photo was done by madmoo. The QR code in the photograph is worth scanning and especially if you're hungry and like to cook.
"Cairn" is a simple and serene image of a cairn, the pile of stones used as a trail marker. Jerry is transfixed by cairns whenever he comes across one while hiking in the Cascades. (trivia: JetCityOrange began as a site called "The Cairn Project".)

#OccupyOakland & #OccupyWallStreet Protest Advice

Watch these videos to learn how the police act and respond. The news media videos give overviews but the YouTube videos give you an idea of what you'll experience in the streets. Watch & Learn!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcXNUif1Zv8

Watch the police Where are they? What do you think their game plan is? Is it a sweep or a pinch? What are they lining up to do to you?

Know where you are Learn the local geography beforehand. Look at maps. Street layout, escape routes, deadends. Know your options.

Think in advance What are you prepared to do? Stand your ground, go to jail, retreat? Be prepared to change your plan in response to unfolding events.

Know the people around you Are you along or with friends? Strangers or familiar faces? Talk to them before anything happens. Are there those you feel you can count on? Are there those who may need your help or assistance?

What's the weather? It doesn't take a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. If tear gas or other chemical agents are going to be used, are you upwind or downwind?

Take video & photos I always begin by photographing the police before anything happens including badge numbers and faces. Don't provoke them but stand your ground, up close and personal. Act as a witness, collect evidence, share it with the world.

Think, don't panic. Take care of yourselves, take care of others.

And don't forget, we're going to win!

Free 2012 Calendars With Visual Puns and Easter Eggs From Azalea Software, Inc.

SEATTLE - Azalea Software, Inc. just released their collection of free calendars for 2012. [ www.azalea.com/calendar/ ] Available in PDF format, they're designed to be downloaded and printed on your inkjet or laser printer..

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Azalea Software's trademark idiosyncratic and visually humorous calendars featuring unique photographic images. In keeping with tradition the photos in the 2012 calendars include visual puns and mixed messages. The calendars fit on one letter sized page and feature major holidays as well as the Azalea staff's birthdays. They expect at least an email if not flowers..

2012 is a Leap Year and to celebrate this auspicious occasion, this year's calendars have Easter eggs and poorly hidden messages in them. For reasons known only to himself, Azalea's president Jerry Whiting has infused a an interactive circus theme into this year's calendars..

"I've been under a rock working on foneFrame, our new mobile framework, for what seems like endless months now. When calendar time came around, I used it as a way to purge myself and prepare for the upcoming new year. Nothing thematic like the years we highlighted orchids, graffiti, or neon signs." says Whiting. "We stopped printing and mailing physical calendars a couple of years ago. By putting them online, we get to share them with everyone around the world. It's great!".

Download one or download them all. Link to them on Facebook, tweet about how much you love them, email the link to friends and family alike. The web page explains how to force full bleeds on Epson inkjet printers to accommodate the calendars' design. Quit being a cheapskate and walk a flashdrive to a copy shop and pay for a high quality print. And don't forget Miranda & Jerry's birthdays (3/1 & 12/12 respectively)..

Azalea Software, Inc., Seattle WA, sells mobile web dev tools & mobile templates [ www.foneFrame.com ] and barcode fonts & software [ www.azalea.com ]. They maintain "The Barcode FAQ" and have been known to mouth off in their blog, [ BarcodeNerds.blogspot.com ]. Miranda and Jerry can be found in their favorite coffee house, laptops in tow, collaborating with a virtual team that spans the globe. This line is to make sure you're paying attention..

I'll give up Photoshop while traveling to my favorite WiFi coffeehouse to work every day once I find an FTP program I can live with. Yee haw!
